Non-Surgical Care: Your Conservative Treatment Options

 Accurate Diagnosis

Accurate Diagnosis

While surgery is sometimes necessary, you’ll be pleased to know that most foot and ankle issues can be treated successfully with non-surgical care. In fact, this is always our first approach. Only after we have exhausted all conservative treatment options do we consider a surgical procedure as a last resort.

We start by making an accurate diagnosis through our complete foot and ankle evaluation, then determine the best treatment plan to meet your needs and lifestyle so you can get back on your feet, pain-free, as soon as possible. The recommended plan may be as simple as rest, ice, and shoe modifications, or could involve custom orthotics, physical therapy, or other measures. Here’s a closer look at some of the non-surgical care we provide:

Custom Orthotics

There are many conditions and foot or ankle problems that can benefit from a pair of custom orthotics – from low or high arches, to toe deformities, heel pain, diabetic ulcers, and more! Specially made to fit the unique contours of your feet, these devices provide additional support and cushion exactly where you need it most. In addition, they are customized to address underlying issues causing pain or problems with your feet. For instance, they can help distribute weight evenly, taking pressure away from problem areas. They can also correct misalignment and improper gait by counteracting structural and biomechanical abnormalities.

Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO)

This is a special device that incorporates a custom orthotic with a brace that extends above the ankle. It holds your foot in proper position, stabilizing it, while at the same time allowing for full range of motion.  An AFO is beneficial in a number of circumstances, including adult flat foot, drop foot, and arthritis.

Prescribed Medication

Over-the-counter medication is not always applicable to use, and often does not provide the desired results in an efficient and effective manner. Prescription-strength medication, on the other hand, is provided with your individual needs in mind and specific doses offer optimum results for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.

Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

In many cases, such as following an injury or managing a chronic condition, physical therapy exercises aid in restoring function, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and stability. This is an important part of your recovery and maintaining an active life. We will determine if physical therapy is right for you and refer you to a specialist who best fits your needs.
