Our Philosophy of Surgical Care

Do you need foot surgery or not? Ask a handful of podiatrists, and you may get multiple answers. As it happens, many foot and ankle conditions—from bunions and hammertoes to Achilles ruptures, arthritis, flat feet, and more—can be addressed via multiple possible treatment methods, including conservative and surgical options. How do you know when surgery is right?

At North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute, we understand that the decision to undergo a surgical procedure is never an easy one for the patient, and that no one likes hearing that they may need surgery. We also believe in the power of conservative treatments and want to avoid surgery unless it’s absolutely necessary. That’s why Dr. Keith McSpadden has three strict conditions that must be met before determining an operation is necessary:

  1. You experience pain on a daily (or routine) basis.
  2. That pain is preventing you from living the life you want to live—keeping you from enjoying daily activities or accomplishing daily goals.
  3. You’ve thoroughly attempted any conservative treatment options that may be helpful but they have not brought you adequate relief.

While a procedure can often bring good long-term results, we also understand that there are many important considerations, including financial expense, time spent missing work, potentially long recovery times in which mobility and activity is limited, and more. We will make every effort to inform you and any important family members, friends, or other caregivers fully of all risks, benefits, and expectations before any procedure. It is our strong belief that the best patients are those who are educated and knowledgeable about their own care. Our guidelines help ensure that you never feel pushed into a procedure unless we’re 100% sure it’s the best decision, and you’re 100% ready to make the investment in yourself and your future health.

Lastly, when surgery is indicated as your best option, you can trust that you are in good hands. Dr. McSpadden is a highly trained and experienced surgeon, practiced in arthroscopic surgery, reconstructive surgery, bunion surgery, minimally invasive and plastic surgery techniques, and more.
