When seasons change in Texas, one thing stays the same – we still get a lot of sun! So, even when summer officially ends on the calendar, don’t pack away your sunscreen just yet. No matter what time of year it is, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, and that includes your feet!
The skin on your feet can get burned, damaged, and even skin cancer if left unprotected, but unfortunately feet are often forgotten when it’s time to slather on your SPF. Make sure they’re not “out of sight, out of mind” and apply sunscreen to the tops of feet and toes, and around your ankles, too.
You can protect them even more by following the same rules as you would when protecting the rest of your body from the sun:
Stay under cover. When at all possible, wear socks or footwear that covers the tops of your feet.
Avoid prime time. Try to stay out of the sun when it’s at its most intense, typically between 10 am and 4 pm.
Relax in the shade. Sit under a beach umbrella or the shade of a tree, and make sure your feet don’t stick out from under it.
Reapply often. Put on sun protection for feet every couple of hours or after swimming or sweating.
Don’t underestimate clouds. The sun’s harmful rays can still reach you even if you don’t feel them! Apply SPF every day, even when it’s cloudy.
Mind your medicine. Certain medications can make you more sensitive to the sun. Be aware of this side effect and take extra precautions.
Watch for signs. Check your feet every day for any new spots that seem suspicious, and call us for help if you do notice anything out of the ordinary.
